12/30/2023 0 Comments Bomber crew custom![]() Like the B-29 Superfortress Bockscar, below, who dropped the atomic bomb dubbed Fat Man on Nagasaki, Japan, and whose nose art depicts a train boxcar nuking Nagasaki. “Mors ab alto” is Latin for “Death from above.” And then some art was based entirely on the record of the plane. In the context of war, crews created designs to immortalize their hometowns, their wives and sweethearts back home, to earn themselves a name in the minds of their enemies, or provide some kind of psychological protection from death, among other motifs. This art form is as old as powered flight. The unintended consequence of that effort is a gallery of beauty and style - a lasting legacy in the minds of generations to come. So of course what started as a way to identify friendly units in mid-air in World War I quickly evolved into a way of thumbing one’s nose at military uniformity and authority. Air Force history is filled with examples of Airmen thumbing their nose at authority. ![]() If it is day time, then stars visibility will be always be 0% regardless of altitude, and if the navigator is navigating by the stars at dawn, the visibility will gradually drop to 0% as the sun rises. From the court-martial of Billy Mitchell to Robin Olds’ mustache, U.S. Above the highest layer of clouds at high altitude, stars visibility will be 100%. If it is night time, the navigator will get around 60% stars visibility when flying roughly halfway between medium and high altitude. Navigate by Stars: This unlocks the Stars visibility bar, allowing the navigator to have navigational visibility at high altitudes at night. The player may set as many custom waypoints as they want at any time, but they can only have one set at a time. Notably, the waypoint will move with the bomber until it is selected - it is best to think of the custom waypoint as defining a new direction to travel in instead of a specific location to travel to. The player can click on any point on this ring to place a new waypoint at that position relative to the bomber. With this ability unlocked, the player can move their cursor onto the map, where a purple ring will appear around the bomber. The player may set this waypoint on the map. Custom Marker: This allows the player to set a custom waypoint. If visibility drops to 0%, all progress on the next waypoint will be lost, and all map elements except for the bomber will be missing.Īs with all crew members, the navigator has special abilities to provide the player with more options while commanding the crew. The navigator must have at least 1% visibility to make progress on getting a new waypoint and to be able to set a custom waypoint themselves (see below).Īdditionally, the clarity of the map will scale with the visibility the navigator has, with the map getting more cloudy, making it more difficult to identify map elements other than the bomber, as visibility decreases. The Stars visibility bar is locked until they reach level 8. The navigator has two visibility bars, labeled Ground and Stars, indicating the navigator's ability to see the ground and the stars, respectively. As time progresses, the circle will fill in with green, and once it is completely filled, a new waypoint will be provided to the player to tag to instruct the pilot to fly to it. While the navigator is selected, the player can view a map that contains various markers of known objects and their positions, such as the bomber itself, enemy anti-air and flak, mission targets, waypoints, etc.Ī circle labeled "Next Waypoint" shows the navigator's progress to identifying a new waypoint for the pilot. When this is done, the pilot will fly the plane toward the location of the waypoint, and the navigator will begin to work on providing a new one. While seated at their station, the navigator will periodically provide navigation updates to the pilot in the form of new waypoints that the player can tag in a fashion similar to spotting enemy aircraft. The Navigator can be cross-trained at level 5. After reaching a certain level you can also set custom markers which will greatly help with avoiding hazards or reaching far-off intelligence point. When the Navigator is selected the UI will show a map and the visibilty to the ground or the stars (unlocked at level 8) with the progress made to the marking of the next flight mark. His/her station is right behind the pilot. It is a highly essential role as it is responsible for navigation and locating the position of the plane, targets and hazards. The Navigator is a crew member of the Avro Lancaster.
